AAPL Fall Institute Day Three: Sunrise … Sunset

AAPL Editorial Team

October 30, 2022

Abstract:

From start to finish, Day 3 of the AAPL’s Fall Institute addressed physician wellness, with a meditation, coursework on physician burnout, time for a golf outing and a sunset social. However, the wellness component did not take away from the difficult challenges of forging physician leadership skills.

Breathe in ... breathe out. Day three of the American Association for Physician Leadership's Fall Institute began with a sunrise meditation at the Westin Kierland’s Agave Spa Yoga Studio. The lesson of meditation is that it’s not meant to stop thinking, or to empty the mind, but to pay close attention to physical sensations, thoughts, and emotions to see them clearly and without judgment.

Meditation has been gaining in mainstream acceptance and the physicians understood that one cannot lead effectively without a clear mind.

And with that, the Fall Institute attendees began their day with a full new set of courses:

  • Advanced Behavior Management Strategies, led by Matthew J. Mazurek, MD, MHA, CPE, FACHE, FASA, assistant clinical professor, Yale School of Medicine, Department of Anesthesiology. Dr. Mazurek is the author of Physicians and Professional Behavior Management Strategies: A Leadership Roadmap and Guide with Case Studies .

“One of the most difficult tasks physician leaders regularly face is managing and mitigating unprofessional physician conduct complaints from patients, colleagues, nurses, and staff members, said Mazurek.”

  • Building and Leading Effective Teams, led by William “Marty” Martin, PSYD, MPH, director and associate professor at DePaul University and the author of Taming Disruptive Behavior.

  • Fundamentals of Physician Leadership: Negotiation, led by Amanda Weirup, PhD, MBA, assistant professor of management at Babson College.

  • Physician Wellness Academy (Day 1), addressed clinician burnout and was led by Paul DeChant, MD, MBA, an expert in the advancement of organization well-being.
This session addressed a persistent theme of the Institute: physician burnout. Burnout is the manifestation of dysfunction in the clinical workplace. Over the past two decades, physician burnout has been steadily increasing, with a recent exacerbation due to the pandemic.

  • Practical Principles of Change Management, led by Larry McEvoy, founder of Epidemic Leadership.

AAPL’s university partners presented on the status and value of these critical relationships that deepen the value of membership in AAPL. AAPL has created master’s degree prerequisite courses—and built partnerships with five prestigious universities across the United States—so that members can earn a graduate degree with minimal disruption to their professional life.

The schools are:

  • Kelley School of Business

  • Carnegie Mellon University Heinz College

  • UMass Amherst Isenberg School of Management

  • Thomas Jefferson University, Jefferson College of Public Health

  • Arizona State University College of Health Solutions

The day wrapped up with a golf outing and a sunset social where golf prizes, gifts of books, and membership were awarded to lucky attendees.

For over 45 years.

The American Association for Physician Leadership has helped physicians develop their leadership skills through education, career development, thought leadership and community building.

The American Association for Physician Leadership (AAPL) changed its name from the American College of Physician Executives (ACPE) in 2014. We may have changed our name, but we are the same organization that has been serving physician leaders since 1975.
