Summary:

Wellness 2.0 debuts at the 2019 Spring Summit in May, with plans to make it available at future institutes and individual organizations.

“Wellness 2.0” debuts at the Spring Summit in May, with plans to make it available at future association institutes and by arrangement to health care organizations.

A meta-analysis of interventions for physician burnout, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association in 2017, resulted in two compelling findings:

  • Recent intervention programs for physicians generally have produced “small and significant” reductions of burnout.

  • “The strongest evidence for effectiveness was found for organization-directed interventions.” In other words, burnout is more a product of the organization than the individual.

It also was noted that organizational interventions are rare.

They are not, however, rare from AAPL.

Mindful of the effects of burnout at all levels, the AAPL is beginning an advanced program for health care professionals — Wellness 2.0: Personal and Organizational Wellness — at its 2019 Spring Summit in Washington, D.C., on May 3-4.

The program also will be available at future AAPL institutes, and by arrangement to individual health care organizations through AAPL’s Lx Solutions.

Led by AAPL faculty and wellness experts, the program is designed for chief wellness officers, physicians or teams charged with developing organizational wellness programs, striving to improve their organization’s culture, or physicians who desire to lead from a place of personal wellness and resilience.

Participants will gain the insight, skills and practices to create effective programs and initiatives that enhance personal wellness and resiliency for their physicians as well as influence systemic change to facilitate greater wellness and resiliency throughout their organization. They also will learn how to formulate a custom-designed organizational wellness plan with adaptive problem-solving strategies and an emphasis on the development of a sense of community.

“Mastermind groups” will gives participants an opportunity to learn from and support each other during and after the program on an ongoing basis. All participants will complete the Maslach Burnout Inventory and Areas of Worklife Survey in addition to pre-work activities used to facilitate in-class discussions and educate about the use of assessment results to drive organizational change.
