Summary:

Day three of the AAPL Fall Institute began with wellness activities, and a new round of courses including, what else, physician wellness.

Day three of the AAPL Fall Institute began with wellness activities, and a new round of courses including, what else, physician wellness.

The two-day wellness academy course that began today taught attendees about the drivers of burnout, how they became so significant in the clinical workplace, and how they relate to the manifestations of burnout. Building on the Stanford Well MD model of professional fulfillment and the AMA Joy In Medicine Recognition Program framework, attendees could assess the current status of wellbeing efforts in their organization and design a plan that can serve as a template for driving meaningful improvement in physician wellness and professional fulfillment.

Other courses that began today included strengths-based leadership, population health, and the science of high reliability.

Strengths-based leadership education, provides physician leaders with a powerful, adaptable framework to assess, navigate, and strategize the scenarios a leader may encounter professionally.

The Population Health Academy is an exploration of population health, how it is being applied in the marketplace and all the ways it is driving healthcare from a volume-based industry to a value-based industry.

The Science of High Reliability course is the study of human performance in complex systems. Attendees learned systems thinking, analysis of serious safety events, and techniques to minimize mistakes and waste.

The lunchtime session was devoted to financial wellness with physician leaders learning about tax planning, retirement strategies, and other financial tips in a session sponsored by My Financial Coach.

Then, it was on to some tried and true wellness activities, either a golf outing or a trip to the OdySea Aquarium. A full day of education, strategies for wellness, and some organized downtime. Lots of good karma happening in Scottsdale at the Fall Institute.

For over 45 years.

The American Association for Physician Leadership has helped physicians develop their leadership skills through education, career development, thought leadership and community building.

The American Association for Physician Leadership (AAPL) changed its name from the American College of Physician Executives (ACPE) in 2014. We may have changed our name, but we are the same organization that has been serving physician leaders since 1975.
