Abstract

Leadership is a continuous journey rather than a fixed destination, requiring patience, mindfulness, and adaptability. Using a personal hiking experience as an analogy, this narrative highlights how a destination-focused mindset can hinder growth, while patient leadership fosters resilience, stronger relationships, and sustainable success. Key pillars of patient leadership — strategic foresight, emotional regulation, psychological safety, and root-cause problem-solving — emphasize time as a strategic asset for meaningful change. By embracing patience, leaders can improve decision-making, enhance innovation, and cultivate a positive organizational culture. Ultimately, leadership is a transformative process of ongoing learning, where the journey itself offers valuable lessons and lasting impact.

LEADERSHIP IS LEARNED

For over 50 years.

The American Association for Physician Leadership has helped physicians develop their leadership skills through education, career development, thought leadership and community building.

The American Association for Physician Leadership (AAPL) changed its name from the American College of Physician Executives (ACPE) in 2014. We may have changed our name, but we are the same organization that has been serving physician leaders since 1975.
