Abstract

This article explores the complexities of artificial intelligence (AI) adoption in healthcare, emphasizing that successful implementation relies on addressing people and organizational factors, not just technology. Drawing on recent research and historical experience with health information systems, the authors discuss the anxieties and challenges faced by medical professionals, the importance of human factors and communication, organizational preparedness for system failures, and the critical role of ethics in AI integration. The piece advocates for a balanced, thoughtful approach to AI adoption — one that prioritizes empathy, organizational resilience, and ethical safeguards to ensure a responsible and beneficial transformation in healthcare.

LEADERSHIP IS LEARNED™

For over 50 years.

The American Association for Physician Leadership has helped physicians develop their leadership skills through education, career development, thought leadership and community building.

The American Association for Physician Leadership (AAPL) changed its name from the American College of Physician Executives (ACPE) in 2014. We may have changed our name, but we are the same organization that has been serving physician leaders since 1975.
