The American Association for Physician Leadership’s 2018 Fall Institute returns to Scottsdale, Arizona, with the aim of creating significant personal and organization transformation within the already-changing world of health care.
The gathering, Oct. 25-29 at the Westin Kierland Resort and Spa , offers a variety of educational pathways for an international audience of physician leaders, providing a comprehensive view of where the industry will go — and where careers can grow in response.
The Fall Institute includes more than a dozen individual live courses led by expert faculty members, who will examine the challenges of health care from the perspective of established and rising leaders in the industry. Courses range from the “Fundaments of Physician Leadership” series to “Managing Physician Performance,” with skill-sharpening sessions on such topics as “The Science of High Reliability,” “Professional Accountability,” “Project Management” and “Strategic Thinking, Planning and Decision-Making” also on the docket.

All courses provide continuing medical education credit for physicians who successfully complete the designated work.
As with all AAPL institutes, of course, there’s more than classroom time on the agenda. Themed luncheons, industry exhibitors and networking opportunities abound. Among the highly anticipated bonus activities are one-on-one career advising sessions in the mornings and afternoons. To schedule an appointment, visit the Fall Institute web page and click the “Schedule Advising Session” tab.
In addition, early morning workout sessions are planned, featuring cardio exercises and meditation among other physical wellness activities.
The institute is open to AAPL members and nonmembers alike. Association members receive a 15 percent discount on live events and course registrations, for this institute and future events. If you're not a member, become one by clicking here.
Upcoming institutes include Winter 2019 (Jan. 24-27 in St. Petersburg, Florida) and Spring 2019 (May 3-5 in Washington, D.C.).
Unlike in recent years, the Fall Institute does not include capstone events for Certified Physician Executive candidates. All CPE capstone events have moved to Florida, at the University of South Florida’s Center for Advanced Medical Learning and Simulation in downtown Tampa, to allow for program expansion without having to rely on the timing of institutes, association leaders say. The next capstone is Nov. 15-18.
