Abstract

This article, the second in a five-part series that describes the outcomes of a research study on physician leader development, explores how interprofessional education (IPE) enhances physician leadership development by fostering collaboration across professional faultlines. Drawing on faultline theory and comparative training outcomes, the article presents evidence that IPE cohorts outperform homogenous training programs in communication, trust-building, and inclusive leadership behaviors. Real-world leadership simulations and shared goals reduce subgroup bias, promote psychological safety, and prepare physicians, nurses, and administrators to lead together. Findings demonstrate measurable gains in behavioral leadership outcomes, highlighting IPE as a strategic asset in advancing team performance and healthcare delivery.

LEADERSHIP IS LEARNED

For over 50 years.

The American Association for Physician Leadership has helped physicians develop their leadership skills through education, career development, thought leadership and community building.

The American Association for Physician Leadership (AAPL) changed its name from the American College of Physician Executives (ACPE) in 2014. We may have changed our name, but we are the same organization that has been serving physician leaders since 1975.
