Abstract
Despite high U.S. healthcare spending, declining health outcomes persist partly because traditional medical training leaves physicians ill-equipped to influence policy. The article argues that physicians must evolve from learners to contributors and ultimately to leaders by engaging in four key domains — legislative, research, operations, and public relations — to bridge the gap between clinical practice and systemic change. It outlines how early exposure through organized medicine and mentorship can lead to hands-on research, practical operational experience, and impactful public communication, ultimately empowering physicians to drive sustainable, patient-centered health reform.
