Abstract

Effective leadership in medical practices requires a delicate balance between being cordial and maintaining professionalism. Practice managers, administrators, and physicians must demonstrate emotional intelligence to foster trust and build positive relationships with patients and staff, while establishing boundaries to maintain authority and prevent burnout. But what if an executive is too “nice?” Addressing difficult patients and staff members requires a timely and composed approach that combines empathy with clear communication and enforcement of policies. By operating with professionalism, authority, and grace, leaders can create a harmonious, efficient workplace that supports patient care and staff well-being. This article and short quiz explore strategies for navigating critical aspects of medical practice leadership and taking on a professional’s “nice” quotient.

LEADERSHIP IS LEARNED

For over 50 years.

The American Association for Physician Leadership has helped physicians develop their leadership skills through education, career development, thought leadership and community building.

The American Association for Physician Leadership (AAPL) changed its name from the American College of Physician Executives (ACPE) in 2014. We may have changed our name, but we are the same organization that has been serving physician leaders since 1975.
