Abstract

This article explores the early journey of a physician transitioning into an Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education Healthcare Administration, Leadership, and Management (HALM) fellowship. It highlights the introduction of core learning points, including business operations, governance, patient safety, and organizational leadership strategy. A knowledge base of clinical medicine offers valuable insight but also presents inherent challenges. Pacing of administrative processes, the business of healthcare, and navigating organizational politics all contribute to a steep learning curve. The article reflects on the complexities of shifting from direct patient care to influencing its delivery at a system level, emphasizing the importance of communication, mentorship, and continuous learning. These early experiences offer a glimpse for other physicians entering administrative roles or considering additional leadership training. They underscore the importance of building interdisciplinary trust, allowing for the ultimate success of physician-led contributions to healthcare leadership teams.

For over 50 years.

The American Association for Physician Leadership has helped physicians develop their leadership skills through education, career development, thought leadership and community building.

The American Association for Physician Leadership (AAPL) changed its name from the American College of Physician Executives (ACPE) in 2014. We may have changed our name, but we are the same organization that has been serving physician leaders since 1975.
