Smita Agarkar MD, CPE, FAAPL serves as Service Chief of Gracie Square Hospital. As a senior physician, she spearheads strategic initiatives and is responsible for the recruitment, retention, and mentorship of the faculty at the hospital. Collaborating with hospital administration, she contributes to the development, implementation, and ongoing oversight of the medical services at Gracie Square Hospital. As Departmental Physician Lead for Quality, she promotes a patient-centered care environment focused on quality, safety, and patient experience. She is an Associate Professor of Psychiatry of Weill Cornell Medicine.

Before coming to Gracie Square Hospital, Dr. Agarkar was a full-time faculty member at Weill Cornell Medicine. She spent over 10 years working in various capacities, including outpatient and inpatient services, providing education and training to residents and students at Westchester Behavioral Health Center. Dr Agarkar is a recipient of the Physician of the Year award from Weill Cornell Medicine and Gracie Square Hospital in 2015 and 2021. She also received the Excellence in Medical Student Education award from Weill Cornell Medicine in 2022.

She chairs various committees within the organization and across the enterprise, including but not limited to the Executive Council, Credentialing and Accreditation Committee, and organizational board meetings. Her research interests include neuromodulation and ECT. Dr. Agarkar is an Associate Professor of Psychiatry at Weill Cornell Medicine. In 2020, Dr Agarkar earned her Certified Physician Executive degree in 2020 from the American Association of Physician Leadership. She was subsequently awarded a Fellowship in Leadership from the organization. She is associated with the American Society of Psychopharmacology, the American Psychiatric Association, and the American Association of Psychiatric Administration and Leadership.
