Dr. Teresa L. Schraeder

Dr. Teresa Schraeder, has conducted her professional and academic life at the crossroads of clinical medicine, medical education, journalism, and mass communications. Her experience and expertise in public speaking and presentations, internal medicine, journalism, and medical education, provide a unique background and knowledge base on effective information exchange in the current healthcare environment.

She is the former Graduate Medical Education Editor at the New England Journal of Medicine, a practicing internist, medical educator, and a medical journalist. She has served as the host and moderator for the International Society of Infectious Diseases (ISID) webinars and podcasts and the past on-camera host and producer of Harvard Health Publications, “The Harvard Health Minute”. Dr. Schraeder currently takes care of patients, teaches and mentors students and residents, and writes and lectures on clinical and healthcare related topics. She has written for academic journals and written, produced, and appeared in reports for newspapers, television, radio, and the Internet. She has a deep understanding and appreciation for medicine, healthcare, and the media from the mainstream press to professional academic journals.

As the director of the Physician as Communicator Scholarly Concentration at the Warren Alpert Medical School at Brown University, Dr. Schraeder gives lectures and courses on medical journalism and communications. She teaches and directs students, faculty, and professionals about public speaking, writing and other aspects of communication skills in a professional setting. She has developed and worked on projects for the New England Journal of Medicine (Resident e-Bulletin, Videos in Clinical Medicine, etc.), Harvard Health Publications, ISID, and Oxford University Press.

Dr. Teresa Schraeder graduated from Tufts University School of Medicine. She completed fellowships at the Harvard School of Public Health, the New England Journal of Medicine, and the Kaiser Family Foundation. She completed her internship and residency in internal medicine at Mt. Auburn Hospital Harvard Residency Training Program.

Her work has appeared in the New England Journal of Medicine, the Boston Globe, ABC News, 60 Minutes, Good Morning America, NPR, the Harvard Neiman Reports, Science Editor, and other publications.

She is the author of the book, Physician Communication: Connecting with Patients, Peers, and the Public (Oxford University Press,2019).

Dr. Schraeder is a Clinical Associate Professor at the Warren Alpert Medical School at Brown University. She is a reviewer and judge for the American Academy for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) Kavli Science Journalism Awards and serves as a reviewer for the New England Journal of Medicine and other journals and publications.
