Washington, DC., July 8, 2022 The American Association for Physician Leadership (AAPL) today unveiled a new design for its flagship membership journal, the Physician Leadership Journal (PLJ).

The goal of the redesign is to create a more dynamic, engaging, and prestigious PLJ, one that better showcases peer-reviewed content and offers readers a modern look and feel.

Among the more significant changes:

  • A table of contents for peer-reviewed is now on the front cover. These articles have passed the critical review from the board of reviewers, representing expertise in a wide range of leadership areas. A streamlined peer-review process ensures a fair and rapid publication experience for authors.

  • In addition to the redesign of the peer-reviewed section, the PLJ spotlights innovation and excellence and engages the AAPL members, ultimately strengthening a sense of professional community.

  • DOIs (Digital Object Identifiers) The PLJ has adopted the preferred citation style for an electronic journal via the use of DOIs on articles. The DOI provides a persistent link to the electronic item and promotes discoverability for both the work and the author.

  • The serif font chosen for PLJ text is “Utopia”. Utopia is an Adobe Originals text face designed by Robert Slimbach in 1989. The sans serif chosen for use on titles and subheads, Avenir (which means ‘future’ in French) is repeatedly voted by designers as one of the most beautifully designed typefaces.

  • The AAPL and PLJ brand is further grounded by a color palette designed to feel clean, premier, and distinctive. The PLJ color of choice is Cerulean, which AAPL uses to brand professional development resources.

All these elements — organization, typography, logos, and color — form the basis of PLJ’s new design language. The PLJ rich and new vibrant design helps the reader to navigate quickly to the articles that matter to you most.

The new redesign was introduced with the May/June 2022 issue.
