  • Who is eligible to join the American Association for Physician Leadership?

    Full membership in the American Association for Physician Leadership is open to licensed allopathic (MD) and osteopathic (DO) physicians who live in the continental United States, and its territories and possessions, Canada and Mexico, plus other licensed physicians abroad holding a Standard Certificate certification by the Educational Council for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG). Currently, the association has members from 46 nations worldwide. No examination is required for membership. 

  • How much are the dues?

    Regular membership dues are $295. Active military and public health doctors’ dues are $225. Residents and medical students are $50.

  • What is the purpose of the association?

    The American Association for Physician Leadership, formerly the American College of Physician Executives, is the nation’s oldest and largest health care organization for physician leaders. The association’s primary focus is to help doctors gain skills to assume leadership and management positions within health care organizations. The association offers personalized support to each member, including CME courses, advanced degree programs, career counseling and more.

    Currently, the association has about 11,000 members.

  • What are the benefits of joining the association?

    An array of benefits are offered to members, including a subscription to the Physician Leadership Journal (formerly Physician Executive Journal), an award-winning journal of medical management.   • Must I be a member to take a CME course?

    No. Membership is not required. But members get substantial discounts on all live, online and self-study courses. Sometimes, it’s even enough to pay for membership.

  • I am interested in an advanced degree. How will the association help me?

    The association offers the only graduate program that lets you choose from among four of America’s top universities. Since 1993, more than 2,000 physicians have used the association’s graduate programs to build essential leadership skills they need to advance their health care leadership careers.

    Certified Physician Executive status indicates you have attained a level of training and excellence within the medical management profession. Through education, knowledge and demonstrated skills, the physician leader is equipped to manage and lead a health care organization.

  • What accreditation does the association have?

    The association is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide CME for physicians. The association designates its live activities and enduring material educational activities as AMA PRA Category 1 Credit ™. Physicians should only claim credit to the extent of their participation in the activity.

  • Why did the organization change its name?

    The association, founded in 1975 and formerly known as the American College of Physician Executives, has expanded its role to serve physician leaders with support and education for career enhancement. The association’s position is that physicians are uniquely suited to lead health care organizations as they strive to deliver world-class care.
